Pakistan Super League (PSL)

The Planning for starting the league was underway from many years the efforts got fruit full when in 2015, September the PSL was officially announced. The logo was presented before the public eye on 20th September, 2015. PSL uses a draft system for recruitment of players similar to that of many American Sports Leagues.

First Season

The first season of the PSL was started on 4th February, 2016 in United Arab Emirates Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari and Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarik inaugurated the opening ceremony. In the first edition it comprised of five teams,

  • Lahore Qalandars
  • Peshawar Zalmi
  • Quetta Gladiators
  • Islamabad United
  • Karachi Kings

The final match was between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators, Islamabad United won by six wickets.

PSL Season Two

The second season of the Pakistan Super League is also formaly called as the PSL two as all the matches of season one of PSL were played abroad, this time it was stated that the final maybe played in Pakistan as per the security conditions, Peshawar Zalmi emerged as the champion.

Season three of the PSL

The T-20 franchise of the Pakistan Cricket Board gave the proof of its success by the launch of the third season of the Pakistan Super League in 2018, Islamabad United beated the former champions Peshawar Zalmi.

Fourth Year of Success; PSL 4

The T-20franchise established in 2015 completed its four successful years in 2019 the PSL season 4 had its launching ceremony on 14th February, 2019. On 17th March, 2019 Quetta Gladiators won the final by defeating Peshawar Zalmi.

How was the League Expanded?

The Pakistan Super League was required to be expanded by adding a sixth team to the squad the talks of adding the sixth team from Azad Kashmir were underway but they were rejected by May, 2016. Cities including Faisalabad, FATA, Hyderabad, Dera Murad Jamali and Multan were proposed to have the sixth team. But Multan was selected to be the sixth team if PSL in 2018 with franchise name Multan Sultans.

Profit of PSL

It was announced by the officials that the inaugural season of the PSL in 2016 made a profit of $2.6 million USD. In Pakistan Super League Season four held in 2019 a good amount of gate money was also earned as seven matches were held in different stadiums of Pakistan.

Format

The HBL PSL uses a format called Double Round-Robin format, in this every team plays each other twice and the top four teams move to the playoffs. In the playoff match if there is no result and the match ends with a draw. A super over is played that decides the fate of the two teams. The Pakistan Super league follows the rules and regulations made by the ICC (International Cricket  Council). It also introduced the DRS system in T-20 cricket which was imitated by the international Cricket Council as well. one point is awarded for a draw two are awarded for a win, and no point is awarded for a loss.

The schedule for PSL 5 is around the corner, league is going to start on February 20th, this year. This season of PSL is going to be different as all of the matches are going to be spectated in our own homeland Pakistan.
